What sort of Zip drive is it?

If it's a parallel port drive, see:

http://www.iomega.com/support/documents/10127.html

"There is no drive letter assigned to my Zip® parallel port drive in
Windows® 2000/XP"

There a lot of stuff there - too much, possibly. In brief:

Set the parallel port to bi-directional in the PC's BIOS settings
(usually EPP or ECP). Also, set the I/O address to 378, and the IRQ to 7.

In Device Manager, under the Ports device, Port Settings tab on the
selected device, select "enable legacy plug and play detection". You may
also need to set it to use the defined interrupts.

I believe that you won't need to use the Iomegaware software at all.

I admit that I haven't used an external parallel Zip under XP. I have,
however, used an external SCSI Zip 100 (through an old "Zip Zoom" legacy
ISA SCSI adapter). I currently use an internal IDE Zip 100 drive, which
cost less than $30US at a computer show. (I don't use it much; it mainly
preserves the illusion of getting use out of my twenty five old Zip 100
cartridges.)

HTH.
