Hi there,

I'm having problems with an Iomega zip drive we bought recently. When
I run the installation CD it says setup has completed but when I
restart the machine it says no new drives detected. This is with
Windows ME which it claims to be compatible with. The same zip drive
works fine on my own lap top which runs Windows XP. I dont know how to
start troubleshooting this problem as there are no pointers or clues
given - just 'no new drives detected'. If anybody can offer me any
advice with this I would be very grateful.

Kind regards
Alex

Hi Walt,

The zip drive is an external USB zip drive. I tested the port I was
using on the machine by plugging a USB mouse in to it and the mouse
worked. This suggests that communication between the BIOS and the
actual port is OK I would have thought.

Let me first say that I have an external USB zip drive with Win ME,
and it works. So, there is hope. :)

Do you have one of the types which are separately powered by an
AC adapter, or one of the types which are powered by the USB
port itself? If powered by the USB port, it could be that
it isn't actually getting powered. Do you hear any activity
at all from the drive?

BTW, are you using a hub?

Have you tried letting the computer boot up completely and plugging in
the usb cable after booting? Try it, it may work. I have a firewire
drive on my notebook that won't boot up if it is already plugged in,
but if I but up the computer first and then plug in the firewire drive
it recognizes it just fine.
