I see that this drive can be had for about $125 net now and the DVD RAM
capability sounds nice as a major reason I'd want one is backup and I
understand that RAM disks are treated by XP as just another drive. Very
convenient, no special software needed, right?

I'm a novice with RAM disks, but understand that they come in many flavors
including 4.7 GB single sided single layer and 9.4 GB single layer dual
sided. Right? The second type seems most appropriate, but I'm unsure whether
the Iomeg Super DVD drive can handle it. On their web site's forum a fellow
says all they can handle is the single sided single layer. Anyone know for
sure?

You might want to do a little research into the relative strength and
reliability of Iomega drives ...

Good idea, but this is a pretty new drive, so there is not likely to be much
out there. Also, I know that a PO'd owner is much more likely to post than a
happy owner, so search results are likely biased. No reviews on NewEgg which
is probably the most reliable place to look.

I may be wrong but Iomega doesnt make their own drives , it looks like
its an LG electronics. They have the well known DVD ram + DVD R
format drive. The specs from a glance look familiar as does the face
plate layout.

LG has a lot of reviews at Newegg. Generally the reviews of almost
all the drives at Newegg are positive. Frankly Id rather have a NEC or
Pioneer or something since DVD ram isnt important for me and isnt it a
fading format? I may be wrong again on that.

You can download the manual at Iomegas site for the drive and it does
list the 9 gig dvd ram format. I see its around $20 a disk. Unless you
are nuts about the DVD ram format Id skip it since theres DVD-RW and
DVD+rw and the media is falling in price recently a lot. But your
needs and accessiblity and prices on things may differ from mine so
maybe its for you who knows.

There are claims that a 9 gig DVD+R format is coming out next year by
Philips I think. A simple burn - DVD backup is pretty easy actually
and theres always packet writing which many despise claiming total
lack of reliabilty but I use it all the time. Have been using it for
years with CDRs and now for DVDs.

I have had horrible luck with packet writing on CDRW disks (using Nero's
software). Long format times that are rewarded with unreliable writing. Who
needs that? I suspect that the same would be true with DVD RW of whatever
flavor. DVD RAM is supposed to be reliable and you get direct access to the
disk from the OS level. Much better and worth more for the media.

If LG makes the Iomega drive, then they make a better version for Iomega
than they sell themselves under their own label, according to the reviews at
several web sites.
