Hi,

I recently purchased IOMEGA External USB HDD 250 gb online from
CompUSA.
As per the specification on product box it says that the capacity of
this HDD is 250 GB.

However after connecting this external usb hdd to my WindowsXp
professional laptop, I found that its capacity is only 232GB. What
happened to the rest of 18 GB?

As I understand 18GB is a lot of memory. Is there something wrong with
the product? Can someone explain me why it is not showing 250 GB disk
space as it was advertised on the product box?

Thanks,
Anand

Hard disk manufacturers round off to the nearest 1,000 which gives an
inflated size for the drive. Windows calculates in powers of 2 so for each
thousand, it instead uses 1,024. Multiply those extra 24s, subtract from
the manufacturer's stated drive capacity and you will have accounted for
the "missing" space.
