Recently, this device began acting as a CDROM instead of
a writer. It will play any media, but Iomega's Hotburn
software and MS Media Player do not recognize it as a
writable device.

It displays in Explorer as "CD Drive".

I have it connected to a Adaptec USB 2.0 card, where it
used to work. But now it neither writes on the 2.0 set,
or the original 1.1 hub.

I have updated to the lastest drivers for my chipset, usb
2.0 card and hotburn software. Nothing alleviates this.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled software, removed the
device & added it, etc.

I am running Windows XP (also fully updated).

Need more info, please ask, and I will provide.

Thanks.

Much thanks getting me this far. The system now
recognizes the drive as writable, but now the inserted
media is not recognized as writable.

It hangs slightly on a CD-R, but lights up pretty good on
a CD-RW that has already been written to, but still will
not write to it.

Thanks in advance for the help.

now that the drive is recognized as writable, i would try starting in safe
mode and uninstalling all usb drivers, then shutdown fully, then restart
letting drivers reinstall, then shutdown and restart once more
