Inviting suggestions for client application design

Hi,

We want to develop a client application that can be plugged into
hundreds of other applications used by our bank. These applications
include browser-driven apps, desktop client apps, etc. Some of these
apps run on Windows and others on Linux and Unix. Our client
application will be invoked by clicking on a link or a button from
within these applications.

Our client application will be used for manually entering free form
comments and other info, by the person who is using the host
application. The details he enters will be placed in a common
company-wide Oracle database. This will be the functionality of our
Tagging application.

I am new to web technologies. Can you suggest the
technologies/languages that can be used to implement such an
application?

Thanks
Yash

Yash,

Maybe can you ask this question over about 20 years again. Maybe than Net
has been the one which is the solution for all this kind of problems (Or
maybe there is another one). It is one of the reasons it is developed.
However, in my opinion is what you ask not yet realised. (And if it goes as
the last 50 years it, than probably you get over 20 years the same answer as
I gave you now). It is a kind of same reason why some banks don't like it if
all currencies in the world are interchangable without the need of a bank.

(In the way you wrote it, "Plugged in". When you redesign and create all
those applications new, than there are of course a lot of possibilities)

Just my thought,

As Cor points out, adding the link or button on an existing app is a change
to the app. So, if you have a dozen apps that you want to make this button
available on, you would have to change 12 applications. This may not be
what you want.

What isn't clear: how you plan to tie these comments to the (a) application
being used, and (b) any data context in play at the time. In other words:
what I don't know is this: do you need to collect text in general, or do you
need to collect text because the user is using a cash drawer system and is
accessing customer account 0123456789?

If you can expect the user to enter all of the information, then you can
simply put a shortcut on the screen somewhere and the user can click the
shortcut and start your app up, enter their text, and be done. If, on the
other hand, your app cares what other apps are running, and what data is in
them, then this information has to be available somewhere. This particular
requirement is difficult and expensive in the extreme.

Without knowing more about what your app does, I'm hard pressed to offer any
assistance.
