No, you can send invitations to other Outlook users over Internet mail. I do
it all the time

Thank You so much Vince, but when we do send invites the message lines (even
if no message is sent) looks like this:
"Received: from bgljxp6 [24.123.43.142] by mail.directed-tech.com with ESMTP

charset="utf-8"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
X-Mailer: Microsoft Office Outlook, Build 11.0.6353

X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.2180",
(the message is much longer,) and no one can read them. Also there is no
where to respond; accept, decline, or anything.

The first person to use this feature is our director and it worked (he had a
older version of Outlook), but now he has a new PC and everyone has this
problem and we're all in 2003. And he wants us all to use this and I was
told that it would not work without Exchange.
Linda

Just to be sure make sure the option to use iCalendar is checked here: Tools
menu > Options > Calendar

I don't have that have that option!?

You could have saved SOOO much time had you bothered to include your version
of Outlook in your first post.

For older versions of Outlook, you need to force Rich Text Format. Right
click the address, select Properties, and use the dropdown to select RTF.

Thank You Milly I'll thry this, but excuse me, if you had read the whole post
on the bottom I did mention that we our all in version 2003.

I recently had this problem in Outlook 2002 on a coworker's PC and found I
have to go to the Contact entry, right click the e-mail address for the
contact, choose Outlook Properties... and under Internet Format choose Send
using Outlook Rich Text Format.

I use Outlook 2003 on XP Home, SP2, and from day one I've been able to have
the invitations received as calendar entries. Go figure!

Good luck!

Thank you to all who helped. I did find this page from Microsoft support and
this took care of the problem:
