I was sent a Word document as an attachment in an email recently. I
saved the document into Word and read it. I printed it out, and lo and
behold it printed a couple of decorative headings which were not visible
in the normal Word screen. On subsequently looking in Print preview,
they were there. But how do I get rid of them on the printed document,
they are obscuring the print?
Many thanks for help from any quarter.

Switch to Print Layout View and go to Tools, Options, View tab. Make sure
that White Space between Page option is checked. The headers will now be
seen but slightly greyed out. Double-click the header and you can now select
and delete it.

Many thanks for replying.
I got as far as the View tab. Could see lots of boxes to tick or
untick, but couldn't see one called anything like White Space nor
mention of Page options.
Could you just point me in the right direction?
Thanks for your help, again.

Which version of Word?

First of all, let me apologise for being so slow to react to your kind
replies. We haven't got anything as modern as broadband in our little
town, so we have to dial up, and then write the reply next day and
everything takes an age!

Secondly, I don't know much about computers, and that doesn't help. Now,
I don't know which version of Word I've got. (Oh dear, I can just hear
the groans from all you computer experts!). If you tell me where to
look, I'll certainly let you know.

Thirdly, I was looking at the document in Print Layout view, and was
messing around with the mouse, and suddenly got an outline of what
looked like 'guidelines' around the offending heading. I'm not sure
what I did next, but I think I right-clicked and then clicked delete.
Lo and behold the 'object' disappeared, but I think I saw something
about WordArt. Would any of that ring any bells?

Sorry to be so hopeless, and thanks again for your help. Anxious to
learn!!

Open Word and click on Help, About Microsoft Word and the dialog will tell
you which version and servicepack (if any) you are using.

Terry has told you how to find out your Word version, but in any version it
would appear that your headline was a WordArt object. This is an AutoShape
rather than true text, so it won't be visible in Normal view, but it will be
visible in Print Layout (Page Layout) view.

As Suzanne has almost certainly diagnosed, probably the 'decorative heading'
is a WordArt creation and drawing items can ONLY be seen in views other than
Normal View.
