Invisible files in recycle bin, windows xp home

I delete files but they do not show up visually in the
recycle bin.

However, the bin tells me the files are there and I have
the choice of restoring or deleting them. Clicking on the
restoration button does not work as I cannot select them,
but clicking on the delete button asks me if I wish to
permanently delete the 38 files (or whatever number).

Can delete files but can never see them.

If anyone knows what the problem is and can advise me how
I may make my files visually reappear in the recycle bin
I would be extremely grateful.
