Hi guys,

I installed a new external drive to my xpsp2 system so I can ghost to
it. Upon being connected it was seen automatically and installed
itself and xp announced that my new hardware was installed and ready
to use.
I can't find it! It doesn't show in Explorer or anywhere that I can
see, been into system and so forth. Just not there. So any ideas
please on how I can make XP reveal its whereabouts so I can actually
use it? It's a USB2 connection, I don't see how XP can see it to
install it and then not display it anywhere.

BB,

What happened when you rebooted the system with the drive connected ?

Did you get any software with the external drive that would allow you to
partition and format the drive?

Nothing, no new drive appeared. I tried switching the drive off and
then turning it back on again, that didn't do anything either.

No, just 98SE drivers. I did wonder about that.

While the machine is off unplug the USB cable. Then turn the machine on
and, when it is finished starting, plug the cable in again.

Tried that. What worked in the end, I've come to tell folks, was
trying the USB cable in a different port. Also this time I didn't even
put the installation disk in the drive, thinking hey it's for 98
anyway so let's not confuse the issue. XP took a little prompting but
it installed the caddy, then the drive, then a generic volume for the
drive. So it shows up ok now, thanks to all.

Glad to hear it's working, BB. Is the port that wouldn't recognize the
drive working ? Check for foreign substances (i.e. dust bunnies) that
may be preventing the cable from making proper contact.
