Invisible Browsers Opening

Whenever I connect to the internet, invisible browser
windows open (can only see them if i open task mgr) and it
grinds my computer to halt. In addition, my favorites list
has websites added to it and my start page is often
changed each time i reopen IE.

I assume this is a virus/trojan horse..any suggestions of
locating the problem and eliminating it would be greatly
apppreciated...
