I'm trying to install a downloaded trial of Filequest XP
Gold. Download is okay, but when I try to launch program,
I get an error: c:\...\fqxpgold.exe is not a valid win32
application. This has happened for several other
downloaded programs as well. Is this a file association
issue? (I may have changed a file association by
accident, but can't remember which one it was). How can i
rectify this?

I've searched the Windows KB, but most similar
errors/solutions
are for specific programs, but this seems to be affecting
several.

Many thanks.

Running a program doesn't require a file association to launch (file
associations allow non-program files to cause the OS to initiate the running
of a program for you). When you run a program, the OS loads and checks its
header for the information that it needs to get things going. If the
information is corrupted and/or missing, you will get that error. You will
need to contact the vendor to see if they are aware of the problem and if
there is an update to address the issue.

If this is happening regularly, it could mean that you are having a problem
somewhere else that is causing corruption. This could mean that you have an
antivirus app that is having a problem, a modem that is not correcting for
errors, or hard-drive problems. You should probably make sure that you have
the latest Anti-virus software from your provider, run Windows Update to
make sure you have the latest drivers for your system, and run ChkDsk on
your hard-drive to make sure there are not hidden problems.
