Question

I have an authentic version of Windows that was part of an HP OEM bundle at
the time of purchase of my computer. I always passed validation before on
the MSN udate site but for some reason I get a message that my PID is
invalid. HP advised me that since the program was part of a bundle they
don't have to assist me in resolving the validation problem. MSN has not
provided the proper answer &/or direction. I probably am using a program
that somehow changed the format on the PID. I am using Registry Mechanic
that is a conflict catcher program and Norton's Internet Security Program as
well.

Can someone help me?

Thanks.

I now have the same issue...ive never had a problem in the past...but now i
have the *invalid counterfeit version of windows message* and microsoft wont
help support thier own damn product unless you pay em. grrrrrr anyone find a
fix for this? My copy came with my computer, all ive done recently is install
a new hard drive and copy the contents over to it.

Well, I guess that answers my question! I only joined here today, and only
because I got that "counterfeit" message on an e-machine I bought from
wal-mart less than a year ago. No changes to the windows that came
pre-installed. I have proof that the software is legit, and I have no
intention of spending my time and money to fix it. I plan to sue Microsoft
for selling me a product and then calling it counterfeit. The folks at
Microsoft have no right to steal my time and money because they cannot make
the software work.>

well after returning to the store where i had my pc built..it is out of
busines....i tracked them down thru mail...and discovered to save money..they
used the same install xp disk on all thier built machines. so i got a god
damn copy. Thanks to thier stupidity now im screwed, no wonder they are out
of business.

Not necessarily.

http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/purchase/purchaseFAQ.aspx

Complimentary offer: In the US, Microsoft will make a complimentary copy of Windows XP Pro available to customers that have been sold counterfeit Windows. Customers will be required to submit a proof of purchase, their counterfeit CD, and complete a counterfeit report with details of their purchase. Only high-quality counterfeit Windows will qualify for the complimentary offer. More information about the qualifying criteria is available at http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/purchase/QualifyInfo.aspx.

You may be able to explain that the company pre-installed XP. If you got a CD from them, with the purchase, you may qualify for the above offer.

At the very least, turn over the information you have to MS (http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/ww/windows/what.aspx) so they can persue their legal options. You may also be able to file a complaint with the authorities that the company did business in for fraud and other possible criminal and civil actions.

Unfortunately a lot of users are finding out the hard way they purchased
from unscrupulous builders. The fact that you had no COA sticker on the case
was a dead giveaway that the vendor was using pirated copies.
