some registry helper came up on my screen and said I have 177 Invalid Entries
how do I get rid of these for free?

In Ree had this to say:

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

You don't. Unless you're having a specific problem then don't bother with
the registry cleaners.

Did you install the registry cleaner? If not you've been hit with a drive-by
download. Keep your PC up to date via installing updates and, scan for
malware.

This "registry helper" is undoubtedly spyware installed on your computer.

Even if it's true that you have 177 invalid entries (and it may not be), do
not attempt to get rid of them, either by buying the product the spyware is
trying to sell you, or by using any other registry cleaner.

Do not try to clean the registry. Routine cleaning of the registry isn't
needed and is dangerous. Leave the registry alone and don't use a registry
cleaner. Despite what many people think, and what vendors of registry
cleaning
software try to convince you of, having unused registry entries doesn't
really hurt you.

The risk of a serious problem caused by a registry cleaner erroneously
removing an entry you need is far greater than any potential benefit it may
have.

If something came to your screen without your knowledge then it can be a
malware. Do a scan.

Hi Ken, I have been using the Windows One Care to clean my registry,
they say it would help???

"They" say a lot of things...

Read this again:

He knows what he's talking about. Also read the first post here:

http://www.windowsbbs.com:80/windows-xp/61015-xp-fixes-myth-1-registry-cleaners.html

Highlights from Bill Castner's summary:

Q: Will using Registry Cleaners speed-up my system and make it more
reliable?

A: It will have no effect on system speed. There is an excellent chance
it will make your system *less* reliable.

Q: So what should I do about the registry?

A: The best thing you can do is to enable System Restore and add to your
Autostart applications a registry backup. Strongly recommended for this
is ERUNT (freeware).
I am confused now, so should I not bother
doing any cleans at all, I use windows one care and the disk clean,
thinking it was a must.

"Cleaning" the registry yields no significant improvement and carries a
risk. It is not recommended, especially for those who are not advanced
power users (at least the power users will always have a very recent
image or clone handy just in case, and even most of them still know it's
a waste of time to "clean" the registry so they wouldn't be doing it in
the first place!).

However, cleaning temp files and occasionally defragging the drive *is*
good practice and is therefore recommended. You may use Windows XP's
Disk Cleanup for this. Ccleaner is also good (as long as you stay away
from its registry component!).
