Most of the time when I turn on the computer, I get a message saying
"Invalid configuration" It then does an automatic config after I press F1,
but then I have to set the time. Also tried Last known good config, but this
doesn't fix it. Also tried CHKDSK with no luck. What to do ?

This definitely means that the CMOS battery is dead.

Of course not, since the message appears before the system is aware of the
presence of a hard disk or operating system.
What to do ?

Replace the CMOS battery. This will be under $5. You'll need to reset the
date/time once more, then you'll be good for a few years.

For some unknown reason, I didn't receive anything except your last message.
From what I gather, I need a new battery
Is this correct ? Sounds like a big project :-(

Thank you (I got this message)

CMOS battery. If your computer is a desktop, you need to unplug it
(not just turn it off - UNPLUG it), remove the outer case (usually no
more than 4 or 5 screws), and find it.

It's a nickel-sized battery, and replacements are easy to find.

If you're squeamish about going inside your computer, take it to a
local shop (NOT Geek Squad).
