Any trouble free utility to stop intruders from
websites during surfing?
I get quite often unwanted programs loaded
on to my computer and get messedup the
WinMe registry. I do not go to any queer sites
but still they continue to come in.
Like PowerScan Orbit Explorer full of commercial sales and games and it is
very hard
to get rid of them.
Any help would be highly appreciated.
Thanks.

Use Off By One for your browser:

If you want more features, try Mozilla or one of its cousins such as
Firefox or K-Meleon:

Don't use IE, use another browser.

If you must use IE, turn *OFF* ActiveX and javascript.

Yes, that will break some sites. So,

If you *must* use ActiveX/javascript, use a web proxy like the
Proxomitron or Privoxy to control what goes through your HTTP connection.

To clean your system, run both Adaware by Lavasoft and Spybot Search &
Destroy by Patrick Kolla, and then keep them updated. Run them regularly.

Spywareblaster and BHOcop may be useful also, along with CWShredder.

This website may be of use also:

http://www.pchell.com

All programs mentioned are freeware; Google 'em.

Other security tips:

Use a firewall, and learn how to configure it properly.
Use a NAT-enabled router, regardless of how many computers you have
connected to the internet.
Keep your AV/AT current and scan regularly.

HTH,

Thanks for the response.

....and if you think THAT'S weird...

sethra :
Don't use IE, use another browser.

have a look at firefox as a replace for IE. Usage (hotkeys, bookmark
management, ...) is almost the same as in IE, but AFAIK it lacks all
the security holes IE has. Installation is done in less than 5
Minutes. Add another 5 Minutes for configuration and even more 10
Minutes to add and configure some extensions like Adblock.
If you must use IE, turn *OFF* ActiveX and javascript.
Yes, that will break some sites. So,

create a secure setting for "internet zone" and a less restrictive for
"trusted sites". whenever a website doesn't work properly, and you are
sure it won't offer malicious code, enter its address to the trusted
zone. It's not 100% safe, but a good balance between safety and
comfort.

very important: keep your system updated. Use windows-update regulary
to be at least somewhat safe from security holes.

NB: WinME is not the best choice of MS systems...
Keep your AV/AT current and scan regularly.

what's an "AT"?

Sascha
