I had my introduction to mono as a freshman in college. In fact, it was
very shortly after my girlfiend had HER introduction to mono.

Well, you know that mono (Novell) stands for 'monkey' in Spanish.

Eh, are you referring to something sexual here? Cause I don't get it. Or
maybe I'm right and it really _is_ just not interesting stuff you're
writing?

Greetings,
Johannes

mononucleosis -- the 'kissing' disease, passed by oral contact -- a kind
of lightweight flu.

maybe it's called something else in Europe...

Ah, I see.

It's "Pfeiffersches Drüsenfieber" in German, where

Pfeiffer = The guy who found it
drüsen = gland
fieber = fever

Also referred to as EBV (Epstein-Barr-Virus). So it's something really
different.

Thanks for the hint!

Greetings,
Johannes

And the Brits call it glandular fever.

Introduction to Mono - Your first Mono app
By Brian Delahunty

Very nice (and well written) article. I usually hate open-source sites
because either there's no documentation, or the author got bored and
gave up.

I hope to be testing Mono in a few weeks time in our new cross-platform
lab, so this will be very useful.

It's also a good reason to stick to C# and avoid VB.NET

Yup, I know exactly how you feel. Just look at these:

Roy,

What he means is, it's rare to find step-by-step guides that take you
exactly where you want to go...that is, from the programmer or users
perspective.

Obviously, there's tons of reference and api manuals for OSS and CSS, but
the beauty of this article is that it cuts right down to what a beginning
user would want to do: install mono, create a web application, and run it.

I thought that from the get go, and made sure my shop focused on c#.

Now I'm seriously considering making gtk# the standard for GUI instead of
Windows.Forms.

That would be a big step, however!!!

Hi Roy,

Sorry, obviously I'm not talking about Perl/Python/PHP and CPAN! I was
meaning the kind of half-baked "codeproject/sourceforce" stuff you see
posted in newsgroups a lot.

As the other poster also indicated, step by step guides are also thin on
the ground, even when it comes to Perl. In my view the Perl reference
docs are good, but the FAQs and intros are horrible.

PHP has a nice help file with a tree view.

Windows Forms don't have a future, so your idea is a very good one.
