A computer in my office has been heavily infested with
scumware due to naive users
indiscriminate surfing and I have been working to remove
it for several weeks
with both Spybot SD and Adaware6 and AdawareSE. I have
noticed that
windowsupdate repeatedly prompts for update #817787
having to do with a
security issue in Windows Media Player. I have allowed
this update at least
10 times since August 13, 2004.
I am beginning to believe that possibly some sleazeware
has figured out how
to spoof the Windowsupdate autoupdate utility. I know
that this is
absolutely impossible, but I cannot help wondering why
this particular update
keeps coming back. I have independently downloaded it
through internet
explorer as well as clicked on the icon in the tray.
Any help you can offerwill be most appreciated.
Sincerely,

You probably don't want to hear this but I think you should back
up, wipe out and reinstall preferably from a CD with SP2
slipstreamed into it. No matter how hard you try you will never
thoroughly clean the machine if it has been heavily infested.

I have a computer impaired relative whose machine I am in the
middle of reinstalling tonight due to the same problems. It's
only taken me about an hour and a half so far. When he brought
it up the start menu wouldn't even open it was that bad.
