Problem: getting system crash and "network places not
responding message".

Environment: XP Pro and ME. Wireless and hardwire
network. two xp machines and one ME machine. host and
ME client see each other both directions (wired or
wireless modes. XP client sees XP host and ME client, ME
sees XP Client. However, XP host DOES NOT access XP
client and locks machine requiring cold boot.

ADD to mix, NIS Pro 2004. All router ip's hard coded
into XP machines.

Final note: Was all working fine two days ago. Nothing
added or deleted to cause the issue.

The first thing I'd do is un-install (not just disable) NIS Pro 2004.
That will show whether it's causing the problem.

Windows XP's System Restore feature is just the thing for a situation
where you're not sure what went wrong. Click Start | All Programs |
Accessories | System Tools | System Restore and tell it to restore
your computer to an earlier time. Pick the time just before the
problem occurred.

If that doesn't fix it, there could be a problem with the network
hardware on XP host.

NIS is not the problem (deinstalled). How can this be
harware if two other client pc can see each other through
the host? Am I missing something?

RESTORE: attempted to restore to four different points
and in each case Restore was NOT completed and not an
option. Another issue?

Thanks for your response but the issue remains.

=====================================
When Restore Points fail, it probably means that
they were corrupt when created. That is probably
the result of bad RAM or failing hard drive or virus
or maybe even spyware. If you have a hosts file
in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc that is more
than 1kb in size, then it probably has corrupt entries
(and some program is inserting entries). Try renaming
that hosts file to hosts.old.

Still have the problem. NIS indicates no virus. Spyware
deleted.

Network Places Not Responding.

How can this be NIC if it sees the ME PC and the other XP
Client sees XP server and ME laptop?
