Sorry to take so long to get back. I've appended the output
First, the vista machine (running Home premium) current except for latest

Now the XP output. Machine running XP Home, SP2, all patches current as of

I've added output from net diag because it show what is probably the crucial
probably, that the gateway is unreachable. Hopefully you can advice me what
idiotic mistake I've made.

I'm almost ready to tell the joke about the helicopter in Seattle....
I have two desktops, one running XP Home, SP2, one running Vista Home
Premium. Each has all updates loaded except a driver for the NIC on the Vista
machine, which is not loaded because the last time I loaded it I could not
get any network connectivity until I unloaded it.
Internet access is through a dial up modem and ICS on the XP box, which
serves basically as a DVR and file server.
About four days ago, I came home from work to find the network was not
active. After running through virtually every possibility, I have been able
to restore internet access to both machines by hard coding the IP addresses.
Now I have internet access from both machines, but neither can see shares on
the other.
I can ping each machine from the other. The Vista box sees a digital video
recorder server that is running as a service on the XP box. On both machines
the network icon shows connected. On the Vista box the sharing center shows
connection to both local and internet.
Interestingly, Network Magic, which I installed on each machine some time
ago when the network failed, shows no network or internet access for either
machine, and in each case shows the other box as "offline." Every time I rest
the NIC from the Vista box, it changes the network type from private to
public (I posted something about that separately.)
I've sort of run out of debugging options and wonder if anyone has any
pearls of wisdom before I start rebuilidng machines.
Thanks,
Len,
Network Magic is just that. If you don't know magic, there's not too many ways
to figure out what's wrong.
Normally, you could look at logs from "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net
config server", and "net config workstation", from each computer, and maybe
diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely (download browstat!):

With NM in the picture, I'm not sure what you'll get. I'll help you, if you
want to give it a go.
