Believe it or not, my wife downloaded a virus through MSN messenger.
Now I cant do a system restore or reboot in safe mode. It also appears
that its uploading tons of data. I have a satellite internet and have
now exceeded my allotted amount. Any idea what virus this is and how I
can get rid of it? It has also seemingly disabled my virus protection.

It's quite possible you can remove this virus (you haven't provided
enough information to identify it!), but I'm predicting it will take a
lot of effort and time.

Do you have an XP installation CD? If not, you may need to restore your
PC to its original fresh-from-the factory condition.

Also, is there important data on this CD that has yet to be backed up?
Do you have access to an external USB hard drive?

It could be the new comer (Conficker) or another new brand came to life!

Try to burn this Iso image and run the live cd, please read the instructions
on how to scan and restore your system.

I would suggest do a live scan using
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/default.htm

or use the http://antivirus.com

Do a full system scan and cleanup,.

IF you do not have access to internet, download stinger from
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ onto a pen drive from a different system and
run it on the infected system.

If the virus is not removed, disconnect the system from internet, take a
backup of your important data and then format reinstall windows all over
again. Install a good antivirus, update it fully and scan your backup before
restoring it on the system.
