Internet time sync fails

M

MiB

the system log tells me "destination not accessible"
1) I can ping time.nist.gov fine!
2) firewall allows port 123 TCP/UDP
3) windows time service is on automatic.

what do I miss?

Hi MiB,

That's weird. Is DNS working - it is when you ping of course. All I can
think of is a bug in the F/wall. You need to look closer: What does a packet
trace show? (Netmon 3.0 will show you - its a free download from MS).

it does not work with any other time server even when I can ping it properly!

Did you try time-a.nist.gov? It has never failed on any of my machines, I just ran
it on 2 machines to test if it would work and it did without a hitch, whereas
time.nist.gov never worked.

Hi MiB,

The idea is to close all programs including your news client (NNTP) - port
119 - which is just "noise".

Run a capture whilst clicking on "Update now" and you should get a few
packets targeting port 53 (DNS) then 123 NTP.
Plus if you have a regular NAT hardware firewall then you don't need to open
an outbound ports anyway.

Uh Oh....!! I can't get anything to work except ntp1.anu.edu.au -
works fantastic.
Why has time.nist.gov/time-b... etc etc. stopped working??? Even
time.windows.com no workuth? Duh?

Hmmmm???? I'm giving up. I'll stick to ntp1.anu.edu.au Maybe this
geographic / ISP blocking.

Maybe try a time server in your area.

This query seems to come up about every three days.

True! the Internet is full of "help - XP time sync problems" and Vesley Vogels advice is not working for me as it fails for many others as well. Time sync obviously is the most unreliable function in XP for way too many people out there.

I followed the directions about three weeks ago and have not
had a problem since.
I
have///time.windows.com///time.nist.gov///north-america.pool.ntp.org///
Default to north-america.pool.ntp.org
