I use a cable modem at home. A Toshiba PCX1100U. Is there a way to increase
my internet speed in windows or is there anything I need to do to my modem?

The easiest thing is to contact your cable service provider and find out
if they have services faster than you currently have subscribed to.
They will probably provide you a faster modem (in exchange for more money).

First find out what your internet speed is capped at. Almost all cable
internet has a "speed limit". Once you know what the max is then you can
test your to see if you need tweaking.
Try here to test speed:
http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/
http://www.dslreports.com/stest

Tweak speed settings here:
http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks
http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/autofix.asp?file=IntSpeed.hta

Of course there are illegal ways to "uncap" your modem and give you the max
speed the modem can handle, but that can get you kicked off your isp and
banned for life.

Hi Tarynup - Well, you can screw things up if you don't know what you're
doing, so this is at your own risk. Go to http://www.cablenut.com/ Do some
careful reading/testing as outlined there so that you understand what's
going on, then download the main package here:
http://www.student.ipfw.edu/~gottjl01/files/cablenut408.exe Be sure to
also download the add-on package for Win2k/XP and then use the appropriate
WinXP_2K_CABLE .ccs for your nominal cable speed from the Update set (not
the Win2k XP T1_T3 unless you have T1 or T3) -
http://dslnuts.com/files/CABLENUT_UPDATE.exe I strongly recommend that you
don't tweak any individual values in these sets unless you're very sure
about what you're doing. Be sure you save your current values first before
you change anything, so that you can restore if necessary.
