Internet Speed

With Windows XP HE I have tried to gain internet speed. The machine is a
Dell XPST 550 with 512 MB memory and over 40 % free disk space with a
Webstar modem with an ethernet connection. IPS is Cox cable rated for up to
7 Mbps. I get less than 3 Mbps. My firewall is ZoneAlarm and the MS wirewall
is off. With ZoneAlarm OFF and Windows Firewall ON the speed is 3.12 Mbps.
Any suggestion to gain the expected speed?

The key is: "Up To 7Mbps". Do you know anyone who is actually getting that?

YOu're not likely to see 7 Mb ever. Also, that's 7 Mega bits, not 7 Mega
Bytes, just FYI. There is quite a difference.
Mb = bits, MB=Bytes. So when you look at speeds, keep that in mind;
they are different! You seem to have used "b" throughout, so I'm not even
sure what you have there.

Here's one of many places you can "check" your speed, here.

Another thing to remember, is your max speed depends on the wires to your
house and how far you are from the last telco if it's wired, and repeater if
it's RF. It's possible you're seeing the best speed you can get, but that's
just a possibility, not for sure.

I used to be on Cox as my Cable provider but they sold it to SuddenLink.
Cox offered three or four levels of connection speed. Maybe you should
call Cox and see what they think about your low speed? If they can't
deliver the speed then maybe you can move down one level and save some
money? Just a thought.
