I have a dial up Windows XP Home Edition 2002 with a dial
up Modem 56Kbps....and I am having difficulty with the
speed...It is very slow...I adjusted my system
performance to forward programming and it doesnt help
much...I am not sure how to configure my system unless I
take hours of reading/troubleshooting ...But I wont dare
access the configuration and change anything in fear I
really mess things up...

Can you help me please?...

Lots of things can slow down a modem connection. For technical reasons,
primarily due to the way a modem operates, you're unlikely to get much more
than 45kbs even if you live next door to the telephone exchange.

If your modem speed is a lot less than this perhaps you could try the
following

Control Panel> Phone and Modem Options>Modem(tab)>Properties>Modem(tab) and
check that the Maximum Port Speed is set to 115200

One nasty trick that some telephone companies play is to split the line
between you and another user. This can effectively halve your connection
speed, or perhaps the 'gain' on your line could be too low. Talk to your
telecom company and ask them to check.

Your ISP should be able to tell you how to best configure your modem for
their service. Look on their help pages on the web or phone them up.
