Internet slows down following SP updates

After installing all the service packs and security
updates, once again, microsoft has induced the internet
slow down problem. There used to be a lot of chatter on
this subject but I can't find it any more
Before I backed out all the sp's I installed, and my
download speed returned.
Due to all the security issues, I am hesitant to remove
them again.
Danged if you do, danged if you don't.
I can't live with acoustic coupler speed on broadband.

Help

You need SP4 but you only need those security updates,
that your router and/or firewall can't handle.
