I've set up my two machines (xppro) for internet sharing, and it works
well. What I've discovered is, with internet sharing setup, the xp
firewall is on. If I disable the firewall, I lose the sharing. Is there a
way around having the firewall up and still use internet sharing. I'm not
interested in using my router and I'm not worried about not using the FW,
so lets not address those. Thanx

Perplexing.
Having the firewall off (client or host or both?) should make no difference
whatsoever, in fact, it's usually having it on that causes sharing problems.
Your host machine retains its internet connection but if you unclick the
firewall in both, either, machines you lose the share instantly or on
reboot? Other than the share your cat5 twisted-pair LAN (?) works with or
without the firewalls? Any other firewall software running?

When I turn it off in services, the shared connnection is no more. It was
off in services and reinstated when i went to internet sharing. Turn it
off, lose sharing.

Try turning it off in 'network connections' advanced tab.

IIRC ICS needs the service running, but does not need it active on any
network connection.
