Internet Sharing

I have a small 3 node network setup primarily for MCSE
study purposes. I have 2 domain controllers with static IP
addresses, and a workstation that has a dial-up Internet
service installed. I would like to share the Internet
service with the other 2 systems, but in order to do so, I
would need to change the static IP addresses to "Acquire
IP Addresses Automatically". Could someone please tell me
if this would create any problems. What the ramifications
of doing so would be, and is it recommended to do this in
order to share the Internet. Or should I consider trying
to setup a NAT configuration (which I haven't really
studied yet). Thanks.

If your "domain" is Active Directory you'll pretty much destroy the entire
domain by changing IP addresses at this point. I'd suggest using DCPROMO to
demote one domain controller first, then demote the other and remove the
Active Directory domain by telling DCPROMO that this is the last domain
controller. You'll need to uninstall DNS as well. Then you can re-assign
static IP addresses in the ICS range (192.168.0.1 will be the ICS host, the
servers can be assigned any static address in the range 192.168.0.2 through
192.168.0.254) and rebuild Active Directory from the ground up.

If you want to see how this generally works in the real world, get a
router/firewall that does NAT - I think someone must still make them with
analog options..... ;-)

Thanks for the advice, I have been looking, without much
success, for a router/firewall that will work with dial-
up. I've got a router/firewall on the network, but I had
DSL up until a few weeks ago. I live in Hawaii and in a
location where the service was marginal and not worth the
cost in relation to the downtime and performance problems.

Thanks for the advice. I couldn't find anything in my
study guides that would indicate the results could be
disasterous, but I figured it would not be a good thing.
Thus the inquiry. Making sure the network works properly
for study purposes is more important than sharing the
Internet for the time being. If I can locate a
router/firewall that will work with dial-up, I'll try to
setup a NAT environment. Thanks again.
