I am trying to share the Internet connection between my two machines

Here is the scenario
The first machine
OS: Windows XP Pr
-Connect to the Internet with a Modem
-The Internet Connection is shared
-It got a personal firewall running
-Can't use IE to open Website
-Netscape works fine

The second mahcine
OS: Windows 2000 Pr
-When this machine try to go on the Internet, it forces the first machine to activate its modem and dial for a connection
-However, there is no Internet Connection, When runs the IE or Netscape. Can't open any web page
-I have changed the setting on the IE-Internet Options->Connections Tab->LAN Settings->Checked Automatically detect Settings, but still doesn't work
-I have no idea how to work with Netscape 7.0, so i have left all the setting as default. However, I wonder do i need to change any setting in the Netscape-Preferences-Advanced-Proxies
-Have no problem obtain the IP address from simple DHCP from the Windows XP Pro.
-Have no problem pinging the Windows XP

Do i have to open any port on the Windows XP firewall in order to get the Internet sharing working? If i do, which port do i have to open or what is the range of ports do i have to open

Why the Win2000 can force the WinXP to dial for a Internet Connection but how come it can't get any Internet connection

Why the IE on the WinXP can't open any Website but Netscape can

Any Help will be greatly appreciated!!

Hello,

Check for DNS name resolution problems on the Windows XP Pro PC:
- make sure that you can resolve internet names using a utility like NSLOOKUP to connect to the internal and external DNS addresses
- make sure that the firewall allows outbound UDP and TCP traffic on port 53 (for DNS proxy from ICS)
- enable 'Automatically detect settings" under Internet Options for IE, clear the Temporary Internet files try again.
- Run ipconfig /flushdns to clear the DNS cache...
Question: Where you able to access the internet before enabling ICS on the XP Pro PC?

On the second PC (Win 2000 Pro)
Question: Does the Windows XP Pro box connects to your ISP when the Windows 2000 Pro tries to access the internet?
If XP pro does connect to the internet, then:
- check the IP lease settings, what is the dns IP address? can you resolve names from Windows 2000 pro using NSLOOKUP?

you asked:
Do i have to open any port on the Windows XP firewall in order to get the Internet sharing working? If i do, which port do i have to open or what is the range of
ports do i have to open?
Ans: check above. Also make sure that the fiewall does not restrict http and https traffic (tcp port 80 and 443 respectively

Why the Win2000 can force the WinXP to dial for a Internet Connection but how come it can't get any Internet connection

Ans: There might be a DNS name resolution problem, make sure that Windows 2000 pro can resolve internet names (i.e. use NSLOOKUP)

Why the IE on the WinXP can't open any Website but Netscape can

Ans: Not sure about this one, but make sure that IE is not configure for proxy. Also clean the temporary internet files and clear the DNS client cache using
IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS
