Hi:

I received a phone call today from a person who said that I had visited
their website today and also identified me as a specific ISP user. When I
got somewhat inquisitive about how they had my home telephone number they
hung up. I now wish that I had stayed on the phone longer and obtained more
info about the caller, but I was somewhat taken back by it all.

My questions are as follows:

When you visit a website do you leave a footprint that identifies your IP
Address?

If this is true, then how could someone convert your IP address to a
specific telephone number? My ISP say they of course do not release any
information, i.e. telephone numbers or other personal info.

I apologize if this is not the proper "Newsgroup" for this type question.
BTW I have installed Ad-Aware SE version 1.05, Spy-Bot version 1.3, and Spy
Sweeper version 3.2. Normally use IE with SP2 installed.

Thanks

Yes, you leave your IP address in the logs. You can go through an anonymous
proxy to prevent this, if you're paranoid.

as for how you'd get a phone number from an IP address, well either your ISP
has given out the information or you've typed your phone number in somewhere
that's also recorded your IP address. It's possible to get an ISP to release
this information with legal means, but I can't think of any that would just
give it out like that. I think this is a hoax call. did they correcty name
the website you visited?

do you have callerID on your phone service so you can find out who this
person was?

Hi Jason:

I also sorta think that this was a hoax call and I am not paranoid, just
an interested party when strangers call. I do not have caller ID, so I have
no way now of identifying the caller. The caller never did identify the
website. I now wish, as I stated, that I had allowed the caller to provide
more info etc. I certainly will be more attentive if I ever receive this
type call again.

Thanks for your timely reply.
