I don't know whether this is a Vista problem or not, but for the last few
days when I access the internet a 'Amber Coast Casino' window opens. In
fact it has just opened now when I have closed my internet window. How can
I stop this nuisance?

I would be grateful if someone could help.

Scan your computer with these 2 Programs, one at a time.

http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html

Spybot Search & Destroy 1.6 is a very good, FREE Anti-Spyware Program.
Download, install, update, and immunize your System with it.
Then SCAN with it.
Update it, and scan your System once a fortnight.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Malwarebytes is as the name says, a Malware Remover!
For the Free version scroll down their page to either download from
Download.com, or Major Geeks.com

Download, install, and update.

Important re: Safe Mode
If you happen to find a problem that you can’t uninstall / delete, reboot
the computer, and go into Safe Mode.
To get into Safe mode, tap F8 right at Power On / Startup, and use UP arrow
key to get to Safe Mode from list of options, then hit ENTER.
RESCAN your computer with your Anti-Virus, Malwarebytes and Spybot S & D
while in Safe Mode.

Good advice, Mick. After you have cleaned up Internet Explorer, Jane, go
download the Mozilla Firefox browser and use it for general (high risk)
browsing. Some websites that are low risk (like your bank, etc) won't work
with Firefox (I don't know why) and you'll have to go back to IE for that.
You can set Firefox to delete cookies, temp files, cache, etc upon closing -
making it more secure than IE, IMHO.

Hi Mick
Thanks for your advice. I have downloaded, installed and updated the two
programs as per your instructions but I can't get into safe mode. Am I
doing something wrong? Immediately after switching the computer on I
pressed F8, but it just started up as per usual. Is there another way to
access safe mode?
Thanks, JD

Sounds like you're doing it too soon. It should be done just as Windows
starts up. Since it's really difficult (read: impossible, truth be told) to
tell when that's happening, the secret is to press F8 repeatedly just as
the BIOS part (the hardware part) of the boot process is ending. If you're
unsure of that, just start pressing F8 almost immediately on restart, and
keep pressing it a couple of times a second for a while. You *still* might
have to reboot a couple of times to get there. It's a serious frustration,
IMO.

Alternative: after a normal boot, run msconfig, and on the Boot tab, under
Boot options near the bottom, select Safe Boot and the Minimal option. I
think Minimal is the right choice; if not, let's hope an expert might chime
in here...

There's a checkbox for Make all boot settings permanent; you might consider
setting that for the next few boots :-)

Wrong. Then it will be too LATE.

It's a simple process. You've somehow made it complicated.

Thanks so much for your help. I'll try again in the morning when I'm fresh.
One other thing: Must I always scan with Spybots and Malwarebytes in 'safe
mode', or is it just for the initial scan?

Thanks again - JD

Mick's reply to you said to use Safe Mode IF it/they wouldn't run
otherwise.

Run normally. If it finds a problem and removes it, you might be OK
(personally, I would reinstall if no backup is available). If it
finds a problem and CANNOT remove it, then do it in Safe Mode.

Hi, I have run the scans on both programs. SPYBOT: 3 Trojans, 96 PUPS,
Media Plex 2 Browsers, Right Media 1 Browser. Fixed all. MALWAREBYTES: No
Malware, just Adware relating to the Trojans & PUPS. Removed all. Have
re-booted and gone onto the net and still have my initial problem of an
extra window opening up (CiD: Celldorado) - in fact as I typed the name now
it opened up again! It used to be a window opening for Amber Coast Casino
that started this whole thing. What on earth is going on? I never go, nor
have I ever gone onto any of these types of sites. I would be so grateful
if someone could help me please. - JD

GREAT STUFF, DAVE! I was beginning to despair. Thought IE protected
against such things..., but what do I know. Thanks so much. - JD

Wrong. Then it will be too LATE.

Note that Windows, not the BIOS, reads the keyboard for F8. If you press
the key only before Windows starts, there's no one to read it.
That is the CORRECT way to start it.

Which is precisely why I recommended it.

Apparently it sounds complicated to you. What I described sounds pretty
simple to me. Furthermore, it works. As the original post shows, the method
is not exactly self-evident until you've done it or had help.

Of course, if it were OS X, it would be not only simple (even for you), but
easy as well. OS X makes a sound for a couple of seconds while starting,
and it listens for the startup modification keys while that sound is
playing. It would be nice if Windows emulated that process.
