XP Professional computer started behaving strangely and could not get on the
internet. The AOL error said that a firewall was blocking access,
regardless of my turning the firewall off. I ran a virus scan, and AVG
identified and deleted 7 viruses. There were also many instances of malware
as identified by Adaware SE. HijackThis and CWShredder helped me delete a
few other bad things, and I got the computer to run pretty well. However, I
could not connect to the internet. I tried AOL dial-up on their site, then
when I got it back to my place I installed two other browsers, a different
modem, and I was able to try a NIC on my broadband. No matter which
browser, method of connection, internet settings config, etc, I could not
get on the internet. I could, however, get on my LAN and see the other
computers, and I could ping everything on the network.

Was the internet problem a consequence of the damage done by the viruses?
How might I repair the damage?

Have you tried pinging internet addresses? Try pinging 209.123.109.175,
then dslreports.com. If the first works, but the latter doesn't, you
have a DNS problem.

Which is typical of DNS proxy spyware gone haywire. Try winsock fixer - and
get some anti-virus.
