When I open Internet Otions>Connections tab>Settings
Button, I see a password that is 16 characters long. If I
change it, and then click okay, the password changes right
back to the 16 character long password. How does one get
the password to stay what one types in? This problem is
preventing logon with a dial-up account.

This is a normal built in security feature of XP. It is a "mask" to protect
your password from prying eyes. Anyone glancing over your shoulder when you
pull this screen up won't know if its 8 characters or 16 characters long.

If you are having trouble logging in with the password, be sure that you
are typing it in correctly. May need to double check with your ISP about
how they want the User and Password portions of this screen filled in. For
example, one of my ISPs wants my full email address in the user field.
Another wants the ISP initials, a forward slash and a name associated with
the online account.
