internet options, get ignored?

Hi
I have recently upgraded to SP2 and now have an odd problem, when
I try to change my internet options to try to
switch "Disable script debugging" off IE lets me clear the check box,
I hit ok, go back to internet options and its back on again?

Things tried so far:
- run spybot
- clear internet cache
- tweak the registry default setting, it will clear the checkbox but
then I can't switch it on and debug still doesn't work anyway
(using debugger keyword in javascript or some rubbish like ignore.ignore =1)
- closing all windows and changing the options from the control panel
- various other odds and sods born of desperation
- did look into reinstalling IE but it looks like it'll be a nightmare,
take sp2 off, reinstall IE, put SP2 back on plus any apps put on since then

Any feedback at all would be appreciated on this one as I ain't got a clue.

Hi :-)

You may have a hijacker, malware, spyware or parasites on your system
causing this problem. In addition to running your updated anti-virus
program, you should do the following to be sure none of these are present on
your system. Some variants of malware can replicate themselves over and
over if not removed properly. Please follow all instructions carefully to
be sure your system is thoroughly cleaned:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Be sure to run CWShredder, Ad-aware and Spybot.
Also be sure to use the HijackThis. Please do not post your log to this
newsgroup, but to the SpywareInfo or the Aumha HiJackThis forums
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30, to allow the experts there to
evaluate your log and advise you of the necessary steps to clean your
system.

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs
below, download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:

http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

Hi
Thanks for the response.
Tried hijack this, I recognised everything in it so that must be ok.
I looked at the registry fixers, I'm running sp2 so I'm not
sure if the keys are in the safe place, however it did make me look into the
registry.
Things noticed by comparing 2 machines
(1) DisableScriptDebuggingIE is missing
(2) I can create a string value anywhere else in the registry (that I tried
anyway) but I can't create a string value here? Something has locked this?

HKEy_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\internet explorer\main

So, the question is how do I unlock this?

I can not find any reference to this file anywhere. It does not appear to
be an MS file. Perhaps someone else might have knowledge of this file in
SP2.

As for this one...I don't have any idea how to "unlock" it, or what might
cause it to become locked, other than some type of scumware.

Although you said that you recognized everything in the HJT log, I would
suggest that you to run the SpyBot, Adaware and CWShredder again from Safe
Mode, and then run a new HJT log from Safe Mode and post the log at one of
the forums listed for the HJT professionals to review. There could be
something that you might be overlooking that is still causing the problem.
Hope this helps :-)

I can not find any reference to this file anywhere.

its a registry key, its next to the Disable Script Debugging key

the stuff visible via hijack is all stuff like word, adobe acrobat, etc.
Stuff you expect to find there.

thanks anyway, I'll keep looking into it

its a registry key, its next to the Disable Script Debugging key

I can add it by logging on as admin and finding it under HKEY_USERS,
however the act of adding it doesn't seem to make it work. There
could be 2 related errors here, does the debugger keyword still work
under sp2?

e.g. with VS.Net installed

<script>
debugger;
</script>

You can test whether Java is working on your machine at the following sites:

http://www.clan.lib.ri.us/clan/javatest.html (This one may be down)
http://www.fitwise.com/testjava.asp (both 1.0 and 1.1 and what's installed)

and you can test Javascript here:

There is good information concerning all aspects of the Java situation here:
http://www.javatester.org/installing.html

Be aware, however, that after Dec 31, 2007, MS will apparently no longer be
distributing Java or providing any support for Java including security
fixes. See here: http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/ so you might want
to start thinking about the future.

You can get the Sun Java J2SE RunTimes or SDK here:
http://java.sun.com/downloads/index.html (all versions - select using the
dropdown)

Sun also offers an automatic download and install of the 1.4 Java plug-in
here: http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html

You can try updating your scripting engine. For 2000 and XP go to

Do you have the JavaScript plug-in installed?

You might also try installing the Windows Script 5.6 for Windows 2000 and XP
if you have not already done so. The install includes a new jscript.dl

Great stuff, debugging works. However I still can't change the options
and
I'd love to know why but this is definately enough of an answer for me
to go on.
There was stuff mentioned here about java but as far as I know java
and javascript are completely seperate, their certainly different
languages.

but again, thanks for your help, I can now go on my merry way
debugging,
which was limiting. eventually I suspect I'll have to rebuild the
machine in
order to get past the other thing but as its not limiting (at the
moment)
I'm not going to worry about it yet.

You're very welcome! Glad to hear you are up and running ok. Good job!
Yes, JavaScript and Java are not the same.

Thank you for posting back and letting us know what worked for you, and for
the benefit of other readers who might have a similar problem. :-)
