Internet Options- Disappeared General Tab

M

Mr. X

In my tools menu, I go to Internet Options. My General
Tab has disappeared; therefore, I can not change my
homepage.

Where did it go? How can I get it back?

Thanks

Download this .reg file to your desktop:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/iegentabs.reg
Right click on it and choose Merge. That should get your tabs back.

This is being caused by spyware:

Use Ad-Aware or Spybot Search & Destroy to remove it.

Ad-Aware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
Spybot: http://security.kolla.de/
(Good site on how to install and use Spybot - http://www.tomcoyote.org/SPYBOT/)

More information here:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/Darnit.htm
http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/ - runs a little script when loading page to check for common parasites

If no joy, in IE go to Tools...Internet Options...Advanced tab, Browsing section, uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions", click Apply, click Okay, reboot. If that solves your problem, then more troubleshooting is needed to find out exactly which program, or Browser Helper Object (BHO) is causing this problem. You don't want to leave it at that, as some BHOs are useful or necessary - like Adobe Acrobat for reading .pdf files or an essential component of Norton AV. Get BHODemon - http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm - read all about BHOs. Disable all items, and then gradually replace one or two at a time to narrow down the culprit.

Reset the Internet Explorer tabs and remove all the browser restrictions.
Download the script from:

Remove IE Restrictions & Restore Missing tabs
http://www.angelfire.com/dragon/sramesh2k/reg/IE_reset_restrictions.reg

Also, refer Fix 268 from Kelly's site:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Restore All tabs in IE and Removes the ** Internet Options ** Restrictions
as well

** The cause may be due to a spyware. Download Ad-Aware from
www.lavasoftusa.com, scan the system and eliminate the malware products.
Re-apply the above fix if necessary.

Ramesh

Hi Mike,

Thank you very for the input. and the presence of the key in the .reg file
does not affect much still? any ideas

Thanks,
Ramesh

Ramesh,
Just because Sandi has it listed there doesn't make it so ......
That entry hasn't been valid since IE 5.0 .......
If you do a search on the WinGuides site, you will find that entry no longer
exists.
[or]
Run RegMon and open IE, you will see that it does not querry that entry.
But no big deal ..... just thought I'd mention it ......

Ramesh,
You can test this yourself .......... (close IE)
Open Regedit, add the below:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control
Panel]
"HomePage"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control
Panel]
"HomePage"=dword:00000001

Click View (up top) select: Refresh, minimize Regedit
Open Internet Options, you'll see the "Home Page" section is grayed-out.

Close Internet Options, Maximize Regedit
Rename the entries to: NoSetHomePage
Click View (up top) select: Refresh, minimize Regedit
Open Internet Options, you'll see the "Home Page" section is not grayed-out.
Close Internet Options, Maximize Regedit, and reset the entries back.
