Seth

I have tried many times to run my DSL internet through my
router and for some reason, It just doesnt
work...Shouldnt it be just plugging it into the router
and the computers work? I cant even get 1 computer to
work on the internet through the router, although when i
plug the cord straight into my network card, the internet
works. Anyone have any suggestions??? I know it seems
like a rediculous post but I know alot about computers
but this is just one thing that I cant figure out.
Thanks

Seth,

If you "plug the cord straight into my network card", and "the
internet works", you have several possibilities:
1) The router is not working (defective).
2) The router is incorrectly setup.
3) The cable used to connect is a crossover cable. You generally use
two or more straight thru cables with a router (one from modem to
router, the second and so on from router to computer(s)). OTOH, you
generally connect from modem to computer with a crossover cable.

If #3 doesn't sound like what's happening, post here with some details
(router make and model would help to start).

Just to check - you plugged the DSL modem into the router's
WAN port and the PC(s) into the router's LAN port(s) - right?
That is the normal way.

With the PCs set as DHCP clients, is the router's DHCP server
enabled? That is the normal way.

With the PC tied to the router, fire up your browser and point it
at the router's IPA (http://192.168.1.1 is common, but RTFM for
your router to be sure). Can you log into your router's base page?
If so, check the router's settings; if not, replace the cable
or the router.
