Ever since I have "upgraded" to Windows Defender my internet has not been
working properly...I called my ISP and Dell and they have no idea what to do
or say about it.

Every time I try to go to a page using the address bar, it says there is a
problem and the program needs to close...I deleted my defender and the
problem persists!!! Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Is this XP or 2000? if it is XP, open up a command prompt and type in" netsh
winsock reset" w/o the quotes :) and reboot. Windows 2000 is a bit more
complicated and you should see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817571 to
reset the LSP stack.

make any sense at all???

Stab in the dark - clear IE History (use Tools->Internet Options->Clear
History. Close IE and restart IE. If you have Aim, MSN Messenger, Yahoo!
Messenger, or Trillian, have you tried to see if you can connect to the
Internet through the messengers? Same goes for AOL Browser, Mozilla Firefox.
Have you tried System Restore (try the other stuff first)?

I am having similar problems since Defender. I am running XP sp2 on an
eMachine AMD 2600+ with a DSL connection. I use Maxthon browser (an IE
shell that adds tabbed browsing) and I have had problems with many (but not
all) sites not loading. I have 2 accounts (both use Maxthon) and my second
account won't load ANY site, even text-only sites. The problems happen in
IE as well.

I have tried all of the fixes suggested in this thread with no success. I
have also tried System Restore, but none of the restore points will work,
even those 1-2 months ago.

Defender has been uninstalled before I tried the fixes.

I hope someone can help us!!!

It certainly sounds as though some manner of malware has hijacked your
browser. Perform various over-the-web threat scans (17 concentrated here
http://secorconsulting.net/). If any one of them fails, chances are you need
to perform a little surgery to excise the beast.

I still need help!!! This message comes up everytime I try to navigate the
web...

"IE has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience."

This has affected my "high-speed" interent as well.

:

OK, Let's try it again. Let me see if I can sort out this mess. Microsoft
had you try an LSP fix for your Winsock settings; the assumption being you
had a broken internet connection. You think you ruled out Windows Defender
because you uninstalled it and also did a System Restore. You think you
ruled out Internet Explorer because you re-installed it. A post indicated
that maybe malware was to blame. So, let's backtrack. Correct me if I am
wrong. You never had a bad Internet connection because you indicated you
could get your favorites under IE and access the Internet. Windows Defender
is out of the picture, maybe? Did you look under Services (Administrative
Tools) to see if the WD service is really gone? What would persist if IE
were re-installed? You have the registry, but the System Restore should
have ruled out bad registry entries unless they were pre-existing. Have you
disabled stuff on IE via Manage Add-ons? I think you need to clarify the
issue of your Internet connectivity, run some malware diagnostics, check on
the issues I pointed out and post your results again. I'm not saying I can
help you, but a clearer picture of what's going on might get some productive
posts.

My problem is:

I have never had anyproblems with my IE until I received an update alert to
upgrade from Microsoft Anti-spyware to Window's Defender. Two days later,
every time I try to navigate from my home page to another site (i.e.
google.com). I get that error message. However, I can still navigate the
web, if I do not click the button to send a report or not. I can just move
it around to get it out of my way. I called my ISP and Dell. They were
unsuccessful in helping me with my problem.

Steps I have taken:

* Uninstalled Windows Defender
* Cleaned IE files, cookies, and history
* Uninstalled and reinstalled IE
* Ran a scan from "start--run" sfc /scannow
* Tried a system restore from before I downloaded Defender (1 day, 1 week,
and one month)
* Ran several Virus Scans
* Checked and rechecked managed add-ons
* Pulled my hair out!!!

NONE WERE SUCCESSFUL

What is this? and what does it mean?

"Did you look under Services (Administrative
Tools) to see if the WD service is really gone?"

I have a dell demension 2400 desktop with Windows XP home edition

Thank you, I think that covers it except for analyzing the problem with a
dump. Might check out what's in the system event logs. I have no further
recommendations. Anyone else care to take a crack at this problem?

Sorry, I missed the part about you asking about Services. Click Start, in
the blue area to the left of the Logoff button right click. The word
properties should appear; click it. Now you should see Taskbar and Start
Menu Properties window. Click customize and then on the next window, click
advanced. Scroll down the list and find System Administrative tools and turn
this feature on. Now you can use it to look at your event logs and also
Services. Alternatively, you can get at the
Services and Event log displays through the run command, but I find it
easier to do it this way.

A process dump would be helpful when the application crashes. Another
thought is...do you want to try the IE7 beta?
