How do you delete/turn off an internet gateway that was
activated? It will not allow the disable/delete commands
to be used.

Hi,

The Internet Gateway icon represents the Internet connection on your
network -- it's either a broadband router or an Internet Connection
Sharing host computer. Clicking the Internet Gateway icon lets you
monitor and control the Internet connection.

I don't think that the Internet Gateway icon itself can cause
connection problems, but here's how to remove it:

1. If you have an Internet Connection Sharing host, un-check the box
in the shared network connection's Properties | Advanced that says
"Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet
connection".

2. If you have a broadband router, connect to its web server interface
and disable the Internet Gateway. It might also be called "UPnP" or
"Universal Plug and Play". See your router documentation for details.

1. Unchecking that box won't remove the icon, it just won't allow the
client to change the connection

2. You might still want UPnP functionality. If you just want to remove the
icon, you can uncheck the Internet Gateway Discovery and Control client in
optional components.

This just happened to me as well. Do you know what
caused it? An XP update?

One possible cause is upgrading the firmware in a broadband router.

The Internet Gateway represents another device (e.g. broadband router,
ICS host) on your network that provides an Internet connection to your
computer. It lets you monitor and control that device's Internet
connection.

I don't know why you'd want to delete or turn off the Internet
gateway, but it should be easy to do. If you have a router, check its
documentation, looking for information on "Internet Gateway",
"Universal Plug and Play", or "UPnP". If you have an ICS host,
un-check the box in the shared connection's Properties | Advanced that
allows other computers to control the connection.
