'Internet gateway' in Network Connections becomes 'disabled'

I'm running NTL Broadband (only gives 1 IP address) into a DHCP router and
then out to a laptop running XP Home and a desktop running XP Pro. I also
have a home network between the 2 machines (thanks largely to other posts on
this forum). Both machines can see each other and both can [sometimes]
access the internet through the router. Both machines run ZoneAlarm firewall
software, which I did shut down whilst creating the network and to allow
each machine to see the other, I set up the corresponding IP address as a
Trusted Site in the firewall config. Network works sweet.

Problem is that on the XP Pro machine, from time to time the 'Internet
Gateway' connection shown in Network Connections becomes 'Disabled' and the
machine is therefore cut off from the internet. I tried to 'Enable' it but
that fails. This does not happen on the XP Home PC. BTW, I also run Norton
Antivirus 2002 on both PCs.

I did an ipconfig/release/renew on the XP Pro machine and the 'Internet
Gateway' entry in Network Connections disappeared completely. The internet
started working again. Bizarre.

If anyone can help me work out why the Internet Gateway becomes disabled of
its own accord, I'd be most appreciative.

The Internet Gateway that you saw in Network Connections is XP's way of
showing
your detected router. The Internet Gateway only shows up if the SSDP
Discovery Service
and Universal Plug and Play Device Host Service are both enabled and
started.
You do not mention if you are using Ethernet (Cat5) cables or Wireless. If
your
Internet Gateway (router) was showing up as disabled, then it would indicate
a problem
within the router itself, or cabling or wireless signal I think.
