Hi, I have just found out that by using Zonealarm Pro cache cleaner it
removed 13MB of T.I.F, but these weren't shown in the T.I.F folder, is it
possible that somehow the location of the cache has been moved by Zonealarm
or something and if so how do I find outwhere everything is being stored? I
really would like the Microsoft Disk Cleanup to be working properly instead
of reporting 0KB T.I.F everytime. Many thanks for reading this.

Hi kevin :-)

It would really make it much easier for us all to follow the information if
you posted all your replies and information back to the same thread each
time and keep everything together, instead of creating a new post each time.
It is very confusing to try to find out where the last post was. :-)

You can run a search for the Temporary Internet Files from the Search
feature (Start>Search>enter Termporary Internet Files) and find out where
they are being stored, if they have been moved. Here is another way:

When you find them, you can move them back to the proper directory:

IE Tools> Internet Options>General tab>cache settings button> move folder
button. Enter the path where you want the files to be.

This might help too:

Temporary Internet Files and Cache

If these steps do not resolve your problem, or you need help with the above,
please post back to this thread with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Jan :)

Hi, have followed all instructions and have now installed CacheSentry - was a
reply to my previous post of 'Internet cache doesn't appear to be working' -
well even cache sentry doesn't appear to be gaining any temporary internet
files, I wonder if someone knows what else I may be able to do, many thanks
for help so far and sorry if I confused people with new threads, I'm all new
to this and being disabled dont get much time at the keyboard, thanks all.

As further more info, it was A.N. Durden who suggested cachesentry which
looks a brilliant little program, once I can get my T.I.F working - as more
info below:-
Windows XP Home Edition
MSinfo32 reports:-
Page refresh type = Automatic
Temporary Internet Files folder = C:\Documents and settings\Kevin
Prince\Local Files\
Total disk space = Not Available
Available disk space = Not available
Maximum cache size = not available
available cache size = not available

Strange thing is this is only on my user name account, any ideas?

Hi kevin :-)

Since it is just with your User logon, it is possible that your User profile
may be corrupt or not working for some reason. Log on as Administrator and
delete your profile and create a new one and see if that will solve the
problem.

Hope this helps

Before I go to the step of deleting my profile (already set as an
administrator) is it worth running any PC Bug Doctor type software? My fear
of deleting the profile is that I will have to re-enter all my settings in IE
and OE as well as various other programs or does the profile delete leave
those intact? I do have a program called Eazy Backup and maybe this may
help. I will continue to persevere, I'm only up in my wheelchair for 4 hours
per day so inputting data can be quite painstaking. Thanks to everyone for
help though. Atpresent I'm just attempting to get cache sentry to work at
startup.

I understand. We can work through this with you. And using the backup will
help, although, I don't know about your profile settings with that. Here is
a program to backup OE files and settings.

Here are some Free on-line scanning websites where you can get your system
scanned. I advise you that not all scanning software can detect and remove
all types of various scumware and their varients, which are vast. However,
give them a try and see if they help. If not, then we can move to
HijackThis and see what it finds, if anything.

Panda On-Line scan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/
Trend Micro Housecall
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
However, these are only aint-virus scanners, not for adware, spyware or
malware as such.

Here are some additional programs you should run as well to make sure your
system is fully clean:
What You Should Know About Spyware

AdAware Personal SE

SpyBot Search & Destroy

Download HiJackThis here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/hijackthis.php
(Create a folder on the C:\ drive called HiJackThis. Install the HJT to
this folder.
Go here before you post your log to do the preliminary steps. Follow all
instructions as much as possible. http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm
Post you log to one of these forums for analysis. You will have to register
and return for your answers. Follow all posting instructions carefully.

Amuha Forums
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30
Bleeping Conputers
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum22.html

It will take a while for these scans to run if you have a large hard drive
or lots of files. But, just set them off and let them go until they are
done. The HJT log file will not take log to scan.

I understand you time limitations, so, I'll keep checking back. :-)

If these steps do not resolve your problem, or you need help with the above,
please post back to this thread with the details and any error messages.

Thanks Jan,

Well last night I purchased PC BugDoctor, I think it's called, this found
some errors and did correct them but still did not solve my problem, to give
you an idea here is what I currently run on the PC to help with adware,
spyware etc.
AVG Anti Virus Pro Edition
Mailwasher Pro
Pest Patrol
Zonealarm Pro

It is looking more like I will need to delete the profile and then rebuild
it again, I have found out that in other features of the help and support in
Windows XP that I am getting 'Internet Explorer Scripting Errors' where
pictures should be displayed, this does not happen at all in the other user
accounts - I also tried cache sentry in another account and it worked
perfectly straight away. Also I have looked at my Eazy Backup program and
this saves user settings in IE, OE, My Documents, Mailwasher etc, so in
theory if I delete my profile I should be able to rebuild it quickly by using
the restore facility in Eazy Backup, it should also put my desktop settings
back I think. I have tried the free online scans with housetrend and that is
clean, also my Pest Patrol for Spyware, Adware is up to date and is clean.
It's looking like something within my user profile has got corrupted -
hopefully as soon as I have an hour or so free I can get this done, I'm
assuming that I can still rebuild it using my name. Again many thanks for
taking the time to supply me hints and tips, it takes me a little while to
get them done as I'm not at the PC till near 6pm UK time (I am in the UK). I
will respond as soon as I can, I'm determined to sort this out, preferrably
before I move house in around 6 weeks time!

Cheers :-)

Just for future reference for you...Zone Alarm and Mailwasher are not
programs that scan for any kind of scumware on your system. Mailwasher
applies to your e-mail, and ZA is a Firewall. They cannot detect or remove
anything related to scumware on your system. .

To do a proper and complete cleaning of your system, need to run the
programs that I provided, as they are the ones that are programmed to do
what you need to have done to clean your system properly.

I don't know anything about the Bug Doctor. Anti-virus programs only scan
for and remove viruses, they can't do anything with spyware, adware, malware
or parasites. Those are handled by the other programs individually that I
provided.

You're very welcome! I understand your lack of computer time, and it sounds
as if you have done a good job and making made good use of the time you have
to work. As I am in No. Virginia, USA, our time is a few hours difference,
although, I am in the processing of packing my house to move this next week
myself. So I will get to your replies as best I can. :-)

Perhaps it is best that you go ahead and recreate a new profile, then we can
be sure if that is the cause or not. If not, then we may have to look much
deeper into the cause to find a cure.

And to you! :-)

Hi Jan :-)

Here's a result of one scan:-

Your browser has been checked for parasites. None was found. (However, new
parasites are being created all the time. It is always possible you have a
parasite we are not yet equipped to detect.)

I have also ran housecall.trendmicro.com antivirus and that is clean, I've
just been running Panda online scan and that sems okay too. Also I have
found some folders of Temporary Internet files called Content.IE5 so I'm
about to investigate them and empty them to see if this helps.

I've tried two spyware/adware programs and they check out okay - one is my
Pest Patrol which I purchased a while ago and runs from start up so my system
does stay pretty clear of adware/spyware. I have also been reading
documentation of my Eazy Backup and this confirms that it will save and
restore IE and OE settings and emails, also my desktop appearance and the
settings for my Mailwasher anti-spam program. I will let you know further
test results I'm working through and then if nothing shows up I will have to
delete my user profile and then rebuild it, but with my Eazy Backup this
might not be too bad :-)

Thanks again Jan

:-)

You're welcome. :-) OK...that sounds good. I would like to see what the
results of the HijackThis log, as that is often where some hidden files can
be found. Be sure you have all Hidden Files enabled when you run the HJT
program from Safe Mode. Some types of scumware can hide in with legitimate
files and can't be detected running the scans while in Windows, or can't
remove it if found.

Good work.... :-)

Hi Jan, well I didn't do the hijack scan in the end, I plucked up the courage
and deleted my user profile and then proceeded to rebuild it - thankfully
with the aid of my Eazy Backup program I was able to restore all my IE
favorites, settings and OE accounts etc within minutes, I also had my
Mailwasher Pro going within moments, so touch wood all appears to be working
- some items do seem clearer as well so I'm hoping that has sorted it. It's
only thanks to this forum that I have got the help to fix it! My tech
support on the PC didn't know. Many thanks to everyone and to you yourself
Jan - I also now have cache sentry installed so this should keep things ok :-)

You're very welcome! I'm truly glad to hear you've now resolved your
problem.
Good troubleshooting and follow through. Excellent job!

I'm also happy to hear that your Easy Backup served you well and you were
able to get back up and running properly so quickly. <s>

Thank you for posting back and letting us know what worked for you, and for
the benefit of other readers who might have a similar problem. :-)

Hi Jan,

Yes my thanks truly go out to everyone who has been of assistance on the
newsgroup, I now know where to put my questions should I have any problems in
the future - it didn't take too long to get things sorted with the aid of
Eazy Backup, plus I learnt a lot and discovered some useful software into the
progress.

Cheers and thanks :-)

Group members who use Mailwasher with a dialup connection may wish to
know a small program has been created to deal with the problem of
Mailwasher not dialing up on a schedule. See:

Claims made on the website are all quite valid and tested.
