I've got a new PC, running XP. All of a sudden, as of last night, I'm unable to open my internet explorer. Regardless of where I try to open it (desktop, menu, etc.) I get an error message before it can even load. It says that IE has encountered a problem and must close. I've tried a virus scan and or course re-starting, but that didn't work. Any idea what could be causing this?

Perform a system restore to a date when IE was working

IE6 Will no longer load So that is three of us here - mine started crashing on Friday - could it be a virus/worm ?????? I hate Netscape but it works so I can still surf. Any ideas on fixes - tried service pack with no luck - will reimage system soon if nothing else works.

I've seen this on two computers starting this weekend. On a friends Dell
with XP, and my laptop. On the XP machine I did a restore point 2 months in
the past and that fixed that. I'll have to restore my laptop, no biggie as I
have it Ghosted.

But my personal computer is working fine, but I am very careful about spam
and run NAV 2002.

I too suspect a virus problem.

My work PC and my Daughters home PC (2,500 miles away) both have the IE6
not starting problem. Both of us started having problems on Friday
1/30/2004. I wonder if some anti-virus software started causing problems.
Mine has mysteriouslly started working again; hers has not.

Will,
From Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced uncheck "Enable third party
browser extensions." If that allows IE to run, then search for and remove
malware:
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Run CWShredder from http://www.merijn.org/downloads.html first. It's been
the most helpful with this problem. It may be the only cleanup program you
need this time. CWShredder is only about 125 KB so it could be downloaded
from another machine onto a floppy disk.

You should re-enable browser extensions after the cleanup.
