Internet Explorer won't load links

For about a week and 1/2, my computer quit loading some web sites. When I
click on a link now nothing happens at all. Other links work fine. Also I
notice when I select Favorites, Organize favorites, the screen is missing
all of the favorites and it is completely unresponsive. I have reloaded
Windows XP three times now with no success. The first time I reloaded
Windows, the favorites worked, but the computer would shut down and restart
automatically every 15 minutes. Reloaded second time and shut down and
restarts quit, but Organize favorites went away again. Messages continually
come up about "Service Pack 1 Common Client Core 1.0.2. Could not find
installation path for at least one component. I have uploaded all updates
and used Nortons, but to no avail.

Thanks for any Help

Hi, Gary. It's good that you did a virus scan, but did you also scan for
spyware? Spyware can definitely cause the sort of problems you are
experiencing. Remove spyware with the free programs Spybot Search &
Destroy from www.security.kolla.de and Ad-aware from
www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure to update these programs before running
them. Run both programs, since they complement each other. It is best
to run antivirus and spyware removal tools in Safe Mode.

If you need more help, please repost. Let us know what you've already
done to troubleshoot.

Perhaps this advice posted by a guest on the following forum (Sat Oct 25,

Re: NIS 2003 Two Problems

This happens because LiveUpdate is attempting to rewrite files that are
already current, and the product catalog file for LiveUpdate does not
reflect that they have been updated, which is causing the LiveUpdate to
fail.

For example, LiveUpdate installs a Common Client update. The Common Client
core gets updated, but the product catalog file shows that they are an
earlier version. In this case, 1.0 is listed in Product.Catalog.LiveUpdate,
when the version on the computer is actually 1.0.8.1

To fix this, the Product.Catalog.LiveUpdate file must be modified to reflect
that the current version is installed on the computer.

To modify the Product.Catalog.LiveUpdate file
Locate the Product.Catalog.LiveUpdate file. (Make sure that you locate the
file that begins with "Product" and not a file that begins with a number in
front of "Product." The files location varies with the operating system.
Windows 98/Me: C:\Windows\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate
Windows 2000/XP: C:\Documents And Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Symantec\Liveupdate

Right-click the file, click Properties, remove the Read Only attribute, and
apply the change.
Open the Product.Catalog.LiveUpdate file in Notepad or similar text editor.
Locate the product that you are having the problem with. In this example,
the product is the common client core:

PRODUCT=COMMON CLIENT CORE
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION=COMMON CLIENT CORE

Locate the Version line. This example is a version for the common client
core:

VERSION=1.0

Append the correct version number to the end of the version number. For
example:

VERSION=1.0.8

Save the file and exit Notepad.
Right-click the Product.Catalog.Liveupdate file and click properties. Change
the attributes to Read Only.

I installed the Spybot Search and Destroy, changed the Live update file in
Common Client Update and no changes at all. Any other suggestions. The
"Organize Favorites" just won's show any favorites to organize.

From a previous post:

Uninstall Norton Antivirus, then reinstall it. If you encounter
an uninstall issue, use the following removal tool:

How to uninstall Norton AntiVirus by using the Rnav2003.exe removal
utility
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001092114452606

Use the above utility to remove all traces of a previous version of
Norton AntiVirus.

Manually launch LiveUpdate at least three times to make sure
the program is properly updated after reinstallation.
