My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:
galen I am running 2000 pro. I had ad aware 6.0 freeware and it found
problems but never would delete them. I just downloaded lavasofts
latest version 1.05 SE and am trying to follow g.com instruction. I
booted in safe mode and ran scan started last nite. It has been
sitting on same file over 12 hrs. Says 'scanning browser cache.' so
far it found 146 critical objects. I dont have days to wait on this
and I certainly wont buy a program that doest offer support except
thru email. Im gone for weeks at a time and I want to talk to a live
human. fix the problem and go on with my rat killing. Any advice?

You'll want to let it run all the way through and delete any objects found,
from the looks of things it may require a couple of runs in your case... In
safe mode the malware that ties itself to running processes will not be
running and thus easier to clean so it's good that you are running it in
safe mode. If it's stuck on one item you can stop it and delete what was
found and try again though you'll do better in safe mode. An option might be
to look into Microsoft Anti-Spyware (it's a beta product but still fairly
good) which you can find on the link I gave you earlier. That application
will enable you to have real time protection from spyware for free. If one
application gets stuck you can *hopefully* stop it and clear out what was
already found and then start it again OR you can use another application. No
one application contains all definitions for known malware and sometimes it
requires cleaning with more than one application just to get to the point
where you need to clean manually. Malware is ruthless stuff and the best way
to deal with it is to prevent it in the first place with real time
protection enabled and updated frequently. Keeping a firewall running and
properly configured and having your antivirus software running and updated
used to be enough but the threats on the 'net are now so varied that it
often requires more than that.
If it's scanning the browser cache and stuck there then you can likely save
the application a bit of time by opening up IE's options (right click the
icon on the desktop > select properties) and delete the temp files and the
cookies. In the temp files make sure to tick the box that says to delete the
offline content as well. That will give the application less to do.
Finding phone support included with software application is not that easy
any more. Even if the vendor claims they offer it they often don't have
nearly the support you're probably hoping for. Not for some of the smaller
applications, they simply can't afford a full blown help desk system at the
prices they charge for their software. Everything you need to keep your PC
reasonably safe and running smooth is available in a free-of-charge form and
some of the applications are entirely based on donations.
