Hello!

I am not able to start up IE. Fortunatly, I have 2
computers, and they are connected via a network, so I am
able to use IE on my other computer, download files which
I can access from either computer, and write you this
message.

I am using Windows 98 on the computer with the problem.

I am able to use Outlook Express on that computer, so
clearly there is no problem with my internet connection.

When I start up IE, I get this message:

"Microsoft Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and
needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

If you are in the middle of something, the information
you were working on might be lost.

[box] Restart Microsoft Internet Explorer"

(note: I have to uncheck this box, or this message will
keep coming back.) The box continues...

"Please tell Microsoft about this problem.

We have created an error report that you can send to help
us improve Microsoft Internet Explorer. We will treat
this report as confidential and anonymous.

To see what this error report contains, click here."

I have sent the report at least once. I don't know where
it goes, or if I should be expecting to get something
back from Microsoft in response. (I kind of doubt it.)
If you want to know the contents of this report, I can
send it to you.

By the way, there is also a DEBUG button at the bottom of
this box. When I click it, I get another message:

"Iexplore - This program has performed an illegal
operation and will be shut down."

What I have done so far:

1. From Internet Options, changed my home page to blank,
just in case there is a problem with it.

2. Gone to Control panel, add/remove programs,
found "Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and Internet
Tools", clicked on "add/remove", selected "Repair
Internet Explorer". It seemed to run okay, and asked for
a reboot. But it did not fix the problem. I tried this
twice. There is a log file called "IE Fix Log.txt" which
I can send you, if it will help. I looked it over, and
could not see any problems reported.

3. Downloaded IE6 Service Pack 1
dated 9/9/2002
file name ie6setup.exe
Microsoft's website says this actually reinstalls Windows
Explorer. When I ran it, I used the manual selection
since I didn't want to reinstall Outlook and Media
Player. The program told me I didn't need to run this,
as Service Pack 1 is already installed, but if I wanted,
i could force a reinstall. I selected this option.
While it was running, it said it needed to download some
files for the process, and was apparently able to do this
despite the IE problem. After it was done, it asked to
do a reboot.

4. Downloaded Updated for IE6 SP1
dated 2/7/2004
file name Q831167.exe

5. Downloaded Cumulative Security Updated for IE6 Sp1
dated 7/30/2004
file name (a very long name)

A reboot was done after each attempt. I'm still not able
to get in.

What next?

What next?

You are using 98, so I don't know if this will work, but try this:

Under Program Files\Internet Explorer, there should be a Plugins directory. Move
any files you find there into another folder. If this works, one or more of your
plugins is defective.

Courtney, thanks for your reply. It did occur to me that
I should try to disable the plug-ins, but I wasn't sure
where to find them. Thanks!

Unfortunately, removing them did not fix the problem.

I think I may have to take this computer into the shop!

Capture the output from doing this. (Also see below.)
To do that drag your mouse over the text below Error Signature
and press Ctrl-c. That puts it in the Clipboard from where you
can paste it into a reply or a notepad window.

Sometimes the crash address is enough of a clue but these days
the most common reason for crashes is interference from third-party
programs. See others' posts for suggestions on dealing with "malware."

Try an experiment for me? (This is not my OS so I'm curious to know
how one gets better diagnostics on yours.) Before clicking on the Debug
button start DrWatson.

There is similar functionality in NTx via two distinct windows but it sounds
as if you are getting it all in one somehow? However, just to be clear,
see the picture in this article to see what I assume you mean by the
"Click here" link. Notice that there is no Debug button on it.
