Internet explorer will not connect....

My laptop is running WinNT 4.0 and IE 6.0. After a recent
(last week) windows upgrade with each login I receive an
error message (Dr. Watson) advising of the following
problem:

exception access violation (0x0000005) Address 0x77f88d33

I am not able to open any websites as the IE 6.0 appears
to stall on opening a page with only a blank page
appearing. On accessing task manager it shows the program
as inactive.

My outlook 2000 also generates the exact same Dr. Watson
error message however, I can reopen and access my email
for a short while.

I deleted the last hotfix and attempted the IE repair
however on restarting no change I get the Dr. Watson
error message for both programs.

The odd fact is I do NOT have a problem accessing the
internet using anything but an internet explorer. I have
accessed the internet with telnet, CuteFTP and outlook
2000. I can ping other computers successfully. Also I do
NOT have a problem with my wireless network card which is
working fine on my home system and other access points.

My error message looks exactly as
noted ....."iexplore.exe exception access violation
(0x0000005) Address 0x77f88d33" or with outlook.exe, or
previously loadqm.exe as the closing software.

While I have suggested it started with a microsoft
upgrade the issue encompasses other webbrowser programs
such as smart explorer. I will not get the Dr. Watson
message untill I attempt under the internet options tab
to click on Connections in either program. At this point
the relative program will freeze. On occasion a Dr.
Watson message is generated prior to this event but not
consistently.
