Hi fellow problem havers and problem solvers, for the solvers, I have been
having problems with IE6 where each time I open it I receive the msg IE has
encountered a problem and needs to close etc..I did an update check and and
found there was an update for IE6 SP1 for my OS (win 2000 sp4) so I
downloaded but when I tried to install it a msg says I need SP1 to be
installed prior to installing this update.. so I assumed from that that my
browser wasnt SP1 so I checked my browser version and it came up with IE6
SP1..??? update still says I dont have sp1 and will not let me install until
I do..so first problem is the IE encountered a problem msg and the second
problem is I cant install the update..please help as my head is about to
explose...kindest regards bones000

Have a look on this site wherein one can download
ie6sp1 as a stand alone part for their os.
say Win98, Win Me and Win2000.

I did WinMe part and solved a few problems by
following the instruction. One can have a good look
on the downloaded file fefore to run the ie6setup.exe file among downloaded
filethe. This file should run the
particular version for Win2000.

I am not an expert have no experience of Win2000.

What that poorly worded message really means that is that you already have
that update or a later one that includes it.

The symptom you give at the beginning sounds like a malware infection.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.
