internet explorer shuuting down

Intermittently I get the message "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem
and needs to close." along with options to "Debug, Send report, Don't Send
Report". Selecting any of these options fails to fix the problem.
It seems to occur on almost every internet session and generally occurs
after about 5 minutes.

I also get the message "IEXPLORE.EXE- Application Error. The instrauction at
"0x7470b439" referenced memory at "0x7470b439". The memory could not be read.
I receive similar messages where the memory could not be wriiten.

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the
malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what
programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?
