internet explorer shutdown

I have XpSp2. I can not enter a address into the address bar of internet
explorer without getting a error and having interent explorer shutdown. I
can search for a site and then click on the site and everything is fine, but
I can not type any address into the address bar without having the error
appear, not even my homepage address. I have scanned for viruses and adware.
What else can I do? Please advise.
