help me please

I've been having a problem with internet explorer and
windows explorer. When attempting to open internet
explorer I recieve a error message stating internet
explorer must close. The same thing happens when i try to
open "my computer", or any other files, just windows
explorer must close instead.

Is there a common file that is shared between the two
that might be missing? I have access to other programs
that use the internet connection such as instant
messaging. I'm really stumped.

Yes, IE and Windows explorer share many files. Your problem is probably
being caused by another program interfering with IE.

Try this...
From IE> Tools> Internet Options...
or
Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced> uncheck "Enable third party
browser extensions."

If IE then functions, go to http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm and
start working through the solutions.

Or, run msconfig. Look at the Startup tab for suspicious entries. Uncheck
any suspicious entries, restart, see if IE opens. Uncheck any program which
might be interacting badly with IE. Disable programs in the systray, those
programs running in the background, to see if one of them is causing this.

If you have access to another computer, download:
BHODemon: http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm (about 125 KB)
Ad-aware ... http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/ (about 1.5 MB)
Spybot S&D ... http://www.safer-networking.org/ (about 3.5 MB)
Install them to the affected machine and run them.

It's also possible that repairing IE will help:

Hope this helps,
