Jim, what email service are you using?

Services like Yahoo often use the programming language "Java" on their pages
and there may be a problem with the runtime "Java" module on your machine.
It is unlikely to be something wrong with the mail service's page, although
that's not impossible.

If you can tell us what service it is someone may be able to offer more
specific help.

There are probably dozens of things that could have caused this problem,
ranging from spyware and viruses to various system faults, so anything you
can remember about what you did just before this problem started happening
might help a lot too.

I have a similar problem. I have a user that is using hotmail account.
It was working fine this morning, but evey time she logs into hotmail
and clicks on inbox she recieves the message "A script is on the page
is causing your computer to run slowly. If you continue to run this
script it may cause your machine to become unresponsive." We say yes
to cancel the script, but nothing happens.

When logged in during her morning session, she just recalls cleaning
out old email. The 2 new emails she recieved were expected?

Any and all help appreciated.

Then maybe it is a website problem, or perhaps some security feature they
have added that requires the latest java package.

I just checked and I was on update 6, there is now an update 7.

http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp

It should be harmless to go here and download anyway so perhaps that's a
quick test.... you really need to be on the latest version anyway.

You should look for J2SE entries in start>settings>control panel>add/remove
programs and remove previous versions because apparently they can still be
used by malware.
